A number of meetings are being held in the next few weeks as the ideas behind the COAG Road Reform Plan will be run past stakeholders to give them the first look at the way the governments are thinking about reform in the way trucking is taxed.
The states have been working hard in the past few years using the latest technology to get up to the minute assessment of the condition of every inch of their highway pavement. They have been working with organisations like ARRB to work out exactly how much it will cost to keep their roads up to a standard able to handle proposed truck movements and masses.
They are getting themselves armed with the kind of well researched numbers and precise costing for each highway which will be needed to get more funding flowing into state coffers for road upkeep.
Where is this money going to come from? Why truckies of course! If we want improved productivity we will have to pay and have our trucks tracked in a tonne/kilometre charge, if these bureaucrats get their way.
The industry will need to examine the plan and immediately start getting the data needed to fight this. After the initial victory which gave us the the diesel fuel rebate and having that consolidated  as a road user charge, there is a chance the states will be able to turn back the clock.
