Rego relief for NSW
Truck operators in New South Wales received some good news when, Minister for Roads, Michael Daley announced a decision to delay the increases in registration fees fror heavy vehicles from July 1st 2009 to January 1st 2010. This is good news for operators struggling to make ends meet and facing a considerable hike in charges, especially for B-doubles.
Minister Daley is making a habit of taking sensible decisions and doing something almost unheard of in government circles, consulting with stake holders and then doing something even more surprising, actually listening to the advice. He then stretches the bounds of believability even further by acting sensibly on this advice.
So far, he has added in a variation in the Standard and Basic Fatigue Management rules for livestock drivers, agreed to revisit the onerous 84 hour rule introduced by NSW as well as engaging with and taking notice of the Road Freight Advisory Council, put in place to do just that, advise.
It has been a long time since there has been a minister in NSW dealing with the transport industry in such an open and transparent way. There have been a series of obstructive and uncaring individuals acting as a sheet anchor, holding back change throughout the Australian transport industry. They have also allowed the worst elements in the state’s Road Traffic Authority to have their heads and disrupt interstate freight’s need to develop along more productive lines.
How long will this last? Daley seems to be a bright spark in a distinctly dull NSW government. If he does well he will get promoted to be replaced with another unknown. The Rees government is not exactly built on very firm ground, the Labor Party has, since the departure of Bob Carr seemed set on falling on its own sword and handing power to the Coalition. If this happens there is very little experience on the opposition front bench likely to make an impression at the Roads Ministry.
The trucking industry of Australia needs to pray the current political situation in NSW remains stable for as long as possible!
