The shape of truck engines to come
Here’s a first look at the Cummins engine of the future, the new ISX15, to be released in the US next year to meet the very stringent US EPA 2010 exhaust emission rules. The engine will use EGR and SCR.
The other major introduction on this engine is the Cummins XPI high pressure injection system, developed jointly with Scania. This is likely to appear here in Australia on a Scania engine first, as they are likely to include it in their 2011 Australian engines to meet ADR 80/03 whereas Cummins won’t need the extra fuel injection pressure until the next stage in emission control.
The XPI runs as a common rail fuel injection system runnning at pressures unthinkable just a few years ago, up to 3200 bar, that’s 33,000 psi. These kinds of pressure levels give the system very acccurate control of when and how much fuel is injected into the combustion chamber to enhance a clean burn.
