Bogged down in red tape
Here is a prime example of how the three tier government system in Australia is holding back a transport industry wanting to improve efficiency and outcomes. This New Zealand combination featured on the Big Lorry Blog is on the road and getting the job done while the same concept in Australia is sitting rotting in a yard somewhere.
The idea is simple, create a combination capable of trunking the load out to a remote area then breaking it down into a rigid and a semi trailer pulled by a second prime mover. Three drivers cover a large complex transport task and productivity is maximised.
The system in NZ allows a sensible operator to show the value of the operation and get a permit to operate. Nearly three years ago a nine axle combination was built to run a similar operation here, carting fuel, after passing the Performance Based Standards test. But through local government interference undermining the national regulations the combination has never seen the light of day.
Who says we lead the world with road transport systems?
